Tax Regime for Non Habitual Residents in Portugal

 

In 2009 Portugal introduced a beneficial voluntary Personal Income Tax (PIT) regime for non habitual residents aiming to attract talent in high value added activities and HNWI’s and their families to Portugal.

 

This regime aims to attract to Portugal non resident professionals qualified for activities with high added value intellectual or industrial propriety or knowhow, as well as beneficiaries of pension schemes granted abroad.

Portugal finally published in the Official Gazette its Corporate Income Tax (CIT) Reform (Law n.º 2/2014. D.R. n.º 11, Series I of 2014-01-16); this was approved on the 20th of December, 2013 at the Portuguese Parliament, with the support of around 90% of the Members.

 

Measures contained in this reform are extremely interesting for companies who have an active role in the development of the Portuguese society, some of which aiming at Portugal to become more competitive in attracting foreign investment.
